Section 8 - MEDICATION GUIDELINES

ANTIBIOTIC

CEFAZOLIN / ANCEF

DESCRIPTION / ACTION:

  • Cefazolin is a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections
  • Cefazolin is often used pre-operatively to reduce the risk of surgical infections

INDICATIONS:

  • Open extremity fracture
  • Penetrating trauma to the torso

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Allergy to penicillin or cephalosporins

POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTIONS

  • Diarrhea
  • Skin reactions (rash)
  • Allergic reaction

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Reconstitute as per manufacturer directions.
  • Do not piggy back it with any other medications. It must be on its own IV. If severe bleeding, TXA is the priority.
    • Adult - 1g IV x1 dose.
    • Pediatric - 50mg/kg IV/IO up to 1g
